The rules for the American version of the race do not change at all; on the other hand they closely mimic the original race that lasts 24 hours. It is the presence of four specific classes for the competing vehicles what is the very important in this mimicking process. Thus, the two out of the four classes are the Prototype classes built specifically for the race and called LMP1 and LMP2 (Le Mans Prototype 1 and 2). The other two classes are made up of sports cars that are changed to fit the race and they can be further subdivided into amateur or professional (GTE-Pro or GTE-AM). The subdivision does not stop there, the Prototype and Grand Touring classes are subdivided even more. The result of the subdivision are the Challenge classes, which contain cars that are identical in every aspect for every team. In this way, it is the driver and his ability to handle the specific car is tested to an extreme, not the budget of the team promoter or the customized engineering of the car used.
Throughout the race there are two or three drivers that rotate. Follow the link to read an informative post about ALMS Racing. Le Mans race is so well known, because it truly is a challenging competition. Each driver during the race has to compete against other drivers in his class, but he has to do that while driving on a track against fifty or so others drivers who are there to compete against the participants in their class. On top of that, every driver is pushed to maintain this state of body and mind for a long period of 2 to 3 hours until he can switch with someone from his team.
Thus, the car manufacturer and the cars provided play a very important role in the race. Certain top-notch manufactures are very proud of their very light and well-engineered cars. There are many components that make up victory and it is the driver's skill, car manufacturer, tires, and car set up that all make it happen.
American Le Mans races take place throughout the US and Canada on tracks in cities in Florida and Georgia and in Canadian city of Ontario. Read over here about ALMS Racing. Although ALMS racing isn't very well-known, it is starting to gain in popularity.
